Working Group 2 (WG2) will focus on transition planning to maintain community mobility as the older adult moves from driving-to-driving cessation. The goal of this group is to 1) appreciate the impact of driving cessation on community mobility and participation to identify the needs of older adults who are transitioning; and 2) identify the best approaches and resources to assist older adults as they transition to ensure that they maintain their community mobility and participation. An important step towards meeting these goals will be to review the existing literature.
This systematic review will focus on strategies or interventions available to support the transitioning from driver to non-driver, as well as driving cessation among older adults, considering their effectiveness, utility, and applicability. Using this collective knowledge, WG2 will build methods of disseminating this information for use by practitioners and stakeholders and make evidence-informed recommendations for future research directions to address identified gaps. WG2 will gather and evaluate available information on assessments, interventions, and resources to support and maintain community mobility for those transitioning from driving to driving cessation. Furthermore, WG2 will map out technological interventions and innovations to support drivers and the transition to non-driver and share knowledge with WG1 of technologies relevant for supporting drivers to maintain their driving abilities. The Action is an opportunity to explore questions around technological innovations, how technology can prolong the driving lifetime of an older adult, what technology adaptations (like levels of automation as compensation for fitness-to-drive) can assist an older adult with transportation planning and making the transition to non-driver? What abilities are needed to be a “driver” of a driverless vehicle? These are challenging questions currently being addressed by researchers in several countries.
